Why Backflow Devices Crack in Winter

Water expands roughly 9% when it freezes. The relief vent, test cocks, and check chambers on RPZ and DCVA assemblies trap small water volumes that have nowhere to expand into — so the brass body itself splits. Damage is usually invisible until the device is pressurized in spring and starts leaking from a hairline fracture.

1. Insulated Enclosure (Most Common)

An ASSE 1060-rated insulated enclosure rated Class I or II handles most climates above 0°F overnight. Cost: $150-$600. Choose Class I (heated) for sustained sub-freezing climates.

2. Heat Tape + Insulation Wrap

Self-regulating heat cable plus fiberglass wrap protects exposed risers. Cost: $40-$120. Confirm GFCI-protected outlet within 6 ft. Inspect heat tape annually — degraded cable is a fire risk.

3. Seasonal Drain-Down

4. Relocate Indoors

Where code allows, move DCVA assemblies inside the building envelope. RPZs cannot be relocated below grade or anywhere the relief discharge cannot drain to daylight.
